Is community TV facing its Waterloo? »
For all intents and purposes, there is no community television left in Canada. When the CRTC allowed the Rogers and the Shaws to re-brand and professionalize those channels, they stopped being community access media and turned into just another source of revenue. Now the cable companies want to consolidate these channels and create “regional” community television, which is an oxymoron. The motivation is to create yet another channel of commercial television. The CRTC’s policy on community TV has been a disaster.
